When you can change your name on a DL
After marriage — using your marriage certificate

Documents you'll need
Whatever the reason, most RTOs will ask for:
Your original driving licence
Marriage certificate (for a post-marriage name change), or
Gazette notification and a notarised affidavit (for a legal name change or correction)
Updated Aadhaar card reflecting your new/corrected name — this is usually the document RTOs cross-check against
A recent passport-size photograph and address proof
If your Aadhaar hasn't been updated yet, that's usually the first step — RTOs rely on it heavily for verification, and applications without a matching Aadhaar name are a common cause of rejection.
The Parivahan process, step by step
The Parivahan Sewa portal is the official Ministry of Road Transport and Highways platform for this, and the process is largely the same across every RTO in India:
Go to Parivahan Sewa → Driving Licence Related Services → select your state
Enter your DL number and date of birth to pull up your record
Choose "Change in DL" / "DL Amendment" and select Name Change
Upload your marriage certificate, or Gazette notification + affidavit, along with your updated Aadhaar
Pay the correction fee online (typically ₹200–₹300, varying slightly by RTO)
Book a slot if your RTO requires in-person document verification or biometrics
Once verified, your updated DL is dispatched by post
Officially, this takes anywhere from 15 to 30 working days depending on the RTO's workload and how quickly your documents clear verification — a Gazette-based change usually takes marginally longer than a marriage-certificate case since RTOs scrutinise it more closely.
