Paid off your car or bike loan? That's only half the job. Your RC still lists the bank as financier until you apply for hypothecation termination at your RTO. Skip it, and you're stuck — no selling, no transferring, not even a duplicate RC without going back to the bank first.
Why this actually matters
Hypothecation just means the bank's name is on your RC as a legal claim, because they financed the vehicle. Paying off the loan doesn't erase that — you have to get it removed yourself. Until you do, selling needs bank consent, insurance claims get messier, buyers knock down your resale price for the pending paperwork, and every other RTO job (duplicate RC, NOC, address change) needs the bank's sign-off too.

Original bank NOC (loan closure letter) — has to be the physical signed copy, not a scan
2 signed sets of Form 35
Original RC
Valid insurance
Valid PUC certificate
How the process actually works
Start by getting your NOC and signed Form 35 from the bank — nothing moves without these. Then apply on the Parivahan portal under Vehicle Related Services, using your vehicle number and the last 5 digits of your chassis number. Pay the RTO fee online and keep the receipt.
Here's the part that trips people up: Bangalore's process isn't fully online. You still need to walk into your RTO and submit the signed physical documents in person. Once submitted, the RTO reviews everything and issues a fresh RC with the hypothecation removed.
Officially this can take up to a month. The usual holdup is something small — like your name showing as "Ram Chandra" on the RC but "R. Chandra" with the bank, which is enough to stall things.

Checking your status online
Log in to Parivahan, go to Vehicle Related Services, pick Karnataka and your RTO, then click "Know Your Application Status." Enter your vehicle or application number and you'll see where things stand.
A few things worth knowing
Moved to another city? You don't need to show up in person — someone can submit your documents on your behalf. Bank NOC expired? You'll usually need a fresh one from the bank. And if insurance settled your loan after an accident, you still need the physical NOC and Form 35 — there's no skipping that step.
Quick do's and don'ts
Do apply right after your loan closes, match your name exactly across RC, Aadhaar, and bank records, and keep your original documents safe until it's done.
Don't assume repayment clears hypothecation on its own, submit scanned copies instead of originals, or wait until you're trying to sell the vehicle to sort this out.
