Step 1: File an FIR (or online lost report)
If your DL was lost or stolen, report it at your local police station, or file it online through your state police's lost article portal. Get a signed copy with the FIR number — you'll need it for the RTO application. This step matters: it officially timestamps the loss, which protects you if the licence is ever misused by someone else.
Documents needed for duplicate DL
1. FIR copy or Lost Report Document (LRD)
2. Aadhaar card or another valid address proof
3. Your existing DL number (check DigiLocker, mParivahan, or old insurance papers if you don't remember it)
5. A recent passport-size photo
6. Filled Form LLD (Parivahan's form for lost/duplicate DL)
How to apply
1. Visit parivahan.gov.in and go to "Driving Licence Related Services."
2. Select your state, enter your DL number and date of birth.
3. Choose "Duplicate DL" and select "Lost" as the reason.
4. Upload your FIR and ID proof, then pay the fee.
5. Some RTOs need biometric verification in person.
6. Fees vary by state, generally between ₹200 and ₹500 officially, though total costs including verification and processing can run higher depending on the RTO.
